Hello, I’m Laurie. I have worked as a freelance illustrator since 2010 and stepped into publishing in 2018 after an epic trip to Bologna Children’s Book Fair. I joined the fantastic team at Pickled Ink agency and secured my first book deal with Ladybird Books. I have published books with Rocket Bird Books (Harper Collins), Andersen Press, Random House US and Ladybird Books, among others. I am starting to create my own stories for picture books as an author/illustrator.
The images I create are upbeat and energetic. I aim to create artwork which appears easy and confident. My process starts with drawing, good old pencil & paper. With a pencil in my hand, I can think and plan and make sense of what’s in my head. My finished artwork is created digitally. Working digitally allows me to be expressive, secure in the knowledge that I can always delete.

In 2024, I had the privilege of studying on the Cambridge School of Art Picture Book Summer School (Advance Track) which sparked my confidence and set me firmly on the path as an author/illustrator.
Back in 2010, my self-written story received the highly commended Macmillan Prize, while I was studying Illustration (BA) at the University of the West of England (UWE).
Being a freelance illustrator has brought variety and adventure! I’d love to tell you about some other things I have done: I’ve lectured on the BA illustration course at UWE and the University of Gloucestershire.
I’ve worked alongside community artists, animators, educators, with robotic engineers, for service users, for festivals, theatres…
I’ve worked as a graphic facilitator (live drawing) and trained with Scriberia.
I’ve taken part in wonderful artist residencies in Spain, Russia and Norfolk. And gifted portraits at Burning Man festival. As a child, drawing was a comfort, I created approx 80 little books about a snail & a slug while visiting my dad on his canal boat at weekends.
I live in Bristol with my husband, (Ben Goodman, an incredible printmaker) and our boy. Both Ben & myself have studio spaces at B V Studios in Bedminster which opens to the public every year, usually a weekend in April. Come say hi and explore the creative space!
